Every season, a handful of guests ask the same question at our curation desk, usually on the last morning of their charter as the boat noses back toward Labuan Bajo: we have the taste for this now, so can we keep going east? The answer is yes, but not by boat. Raja Ampat sits some 1,500 kilometres beyond Komodo, across open water that no Labuan Bajo charter vessel is positioned to cross. The extension is a flight problem, and this is the briefing we give guests who want to solve it properly.

Getting to Sorong: the flight ladder
Sorong’s Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) is the single gateway to Raja Ampat. Everything routes through it, so the planning question is simply which ladder of flights gets you there with the least fatigue.
From Labuan Bajo
There is no direct Labuan Bajo to Sorong flight. Komodo Airport connects daily to Jakarta and Bali, which gives you two workable patterns. The first: fly Labuan Bajo to Jakarta in the afternoon, rest at an airport hotel, and take the overnight Jakarta to Sorong departure that lands at dawn. The second: hop to Bali or Makassar and connect eastward from there. Note the clocks as you plan — Labuan Bajo runs on Central Indonesia Time, while Sorong and Raja Ampat sit one hour ahead on Eastern Indonesia Time, which quietly eats an hour of every eastbound day.
From Jakarta
The Jakarta to Sorong nonstop takes roughly four hours, and most departures leave late at night to arrive in the early morning. That timing is deliberate: it lets liveaboard guests board the same morning. It is also punishing after a full Komodo charter, which is why we prefer the pattern below.
From Bali and Makassar
From Bali, expect one stop, most often Makassar. Schedules on these eastern routes shift with the seasons and are trimmed or added at short notice, so treat any timetable you find online as a draft. Your charter desk reconfirms the live schedule at booking and again the week you fly.
Sorong to the islands: three transfer patterns
Once you land, there are three ways into the archipelago, and your boat determines which applies.
First, and most common for charter guests: direct boarding at Sorong harbour. Most Raja Ampat liveaboards collect guests a short drive from the airport, and the crossing to the first anchorage happens under your own keel while lunch is served. This is the cleanest pattern and the one our sister desk arranges by default.
Second, the public fast ferry from Sorong to Waisai, the small capital of Raja Ampat’s Waigeo island, which takes about two hours. This suits itineraries that begin at a land resort or a homestay before the boat picks you up.
Third, chartered speedboat transfers for arrivals that miss the ferry schedule. These are weather-dependent and priced on request, so we treat them as a fallback rather than a plan.
One document matters before any of this: the Raja Ampat marine park entry permit, which every visitor must hold. Your charter operator arranges it ahead of arrival; you carry your passport and keep the permit tag with you for spot checks inside the park.
The buffer rule: one night in Sorong
The single most valuable line in this briefing: put one buffer night between your last Komodo flight and your Raja Ampat boarding. Eastern-route delays are common enough that a same-day chain of three flights and a harbour transfer is gambling the first night of an expensive charter on the weather over Makassar. A Sorong hotel night costs little, lets your luggage catch up if it wandered, and delivers you to the dock rested. Divers have a second reason to pause: if your Komodo days ended underwater, standard practice is to leave 18 to 24 hours between your final dive and any flight, and the buffer night absorbs that requirement without sacrificing a day.
A sample connection timeline
Here is the pattern we sketch most often, assuming a charter that ends at the Labuan Bajo jetty in the morning. Day one: disembark, a slow lunch in town, then the afternoon flight to Jakarta and an airport hotel. Day two: either the dawn arrival in Sorong off the overnight flight, or, in the calmer version, a Jakarta rest morning and the next night’s departure. Day three: board at Sorong harbour after breakfast, papers checked, gear stowed, and the first Raja Ampat anchorage by dusk. Compressing this into fewer calendar days is possible on paper; the versions that actually arrive rested all look like the above.
Luggage, gear and the practical layer
Two-park journeys punish hard cases and reward soft duffels, which stow properly in phinisi cabins on both sides of the country. Divers hauling their own regulators and wetsuits should weigh bags before the eastern legs, where smaller aircraft enforce limits more strictly than the trunk routes do. Sort the money question in Sorong rather than beyond it — the city has proper banks and ATMs, while the islands largely do not — and expect connectivity to thin out fast once you leave Waisai behind; ask the operator what the boat itself carries before promising anyone a video call. Refill prescriptions before leaving Bali or Jakarta, and pack reef-safe sunscreen in quantities for two charters, because mid-trip shopping is not part of this itinerary.
When the extension is worth it
The two parks run on inverted calendars, and that inversion is the strategic fact of this whole post. Komodo sails best in the dry months from April through November, as we map month by month in our guide to the best time to sail Komodo. Raja Ampat’s prime window runs roughly October through April, when its seas settle and the manta aggregations arrive. The overlap in October and November is the natural window for doing both in one journey.
Length is the other test. Komodo rewards anything from a two-night taste to the full week of our 7D6N Komodo charter, but Raja Ampat’s distances are longer and its logistics heavier, so the desk’s honest floor for the extension is seven nights on the water plus two travel days and the buffer night. If your calendar cannot carry that, spend the days deepening Komodo instead; the fleet directory holds boats we have boarded and graded for every additional night you can spare.

Practically, no. The crossing spans open ocean over multiple days, and Labuan Bajo vessels are licensed, provisioned and crewed for Komodo waters. Every sensible itinerary flies the gap through Sorong and boards a second boat graded for Raja Ampat.
How many days should I add for a Raja Ampat extension?
Plan ten days door to door: seven nights aboard, two flight days, one Sorong buffer night. Shorter versions exist, but the flight effort stops making sense below about five nights on the water.
Do I need a separate permit for Raja Ampat?
Yes. Komodo National Park fees do not carry over. Raja Ampat requires its own marine park entry permit, arranged by your operator before you board and carried with you inside the park.
Which airlines fly the Jakarta to Sorong route?
